The Greek Branch

Music libraries and music archives play a significant role in the development and promotion of music education. Within their environments, synergies are created among music librarians/archivists, information scientists, and musicologists, who together contribute to the field of music information in both analogue and digital settings.

With the aim of strengthening this network within national borders, the national branch of the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres (IAML-GR) was established in Greece in 2016. Since its inception, the Greek Branch has supported efforts to highlight Greek music collections and initiatives aimed at supporting their users. At the same time, it has fostered and continues to foster collaboration between institutions and individuals, so that the fields of music librarianship, music archiving, and music information may develop further and become more widely known. As part of its activities, working groups have been formed to address specific issues (e.g. digitization and documentation practices, management of analogue archival material, music research and methodology, cataloguing, use of music subject headings, etc.), while the Greek presence of libraries and archives is continuously strengthened in international forums.

The Greek Branch of International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres promotes the role and contribution of music libraries and archives in contemporary research and follows broader developments in the fields of information science, humanities, and social sciences. Its Board and members are available to anyone interested in issues concerning the place of music libraries and archives within the musical culture of the country.
